Intelligent Design And The Modern Cellphone

large telephone multi design newtechman

I’ve been mulling this concept over for a long while and it took Josh Helfferich’s single image to bring the concept into sharp focus. My thesis (and you won’t like this) is that every major “flagship” phone in the Western market is now made in the same mold, with the same trade dress, with one goal in mind: to fool the casual observer into thinking that everything is an iPhone. While you can argue on the outliers, the truth is right there. Every major phone released in the past four years has cleaved to this design for dear life. The trend began, popularly, with the Nokia 5800 (some would argue that Meizu M8 was the first) and hasn’t stopped since.

The manufacturers’ fear is palpable and it’s time this parade of phones, designed to mimic one major phone, stopped. It’s bad for the consumer, it’s bad for the carrier, and it’s bad for the manufacturer. (more…)

Apple to Replace the iPhone’s Dock Connector? [RUMOR]

apple-dock-connector-600Apple may be planning to replace the dock connector that’s been synonymous with iPhonesiPods and iPads for almost a decade with something new.

That’s the latest rumor from a smartphone enthusiast site, which says Apple is on the verge of ditching the familiar 30-pin jack for a smaller “micro dock.”

The site, iMore, claims Apple is looking to ditch the connector in its upcoming iPhone 5. The reason: to make room for more stuff on the inside. (more…)

Walkie-Talkie App Voxer Popular With Investors, Raising $15M to $20M At Up To $300M Valuation

3_participants_webThere have been a few walkie-talkie mobile apps that have come out on iOS and Android over the last year or two, but it wasn’t until last fall that one of them had a breakout moment. Voxer suddenly hit it big with the young black community in Cleveland and a few other big cities last November. Since then, it has spread to the rest of the world, topping the app store and gaining a wide range of users – including venture capitalists on Sand Hill Road here in Silicon Valley.

By which I mean, lots of VCs are both using it, and looking at investing in it. Voxer has spent the last couple months working on closing an angel round that it had left open, according to industry sources, while also working on its first venture funding. It’s raising $15-20 million at a pre-money valuation of $150 million, says one person. Another counters, saying that the valuation is going to be at least double that. (more…)

iPro Lens System Turns iPhone Into a Pro-Grade Camera

At this year’s Macworld event, Schneider Optics showed off the iPro Lens System. The package includes professional-quality fisheye and wide-angle lenses, a clever protective cover and a case that doubles as a tripod mount or a convenient handle.

The fisheye lens captures a 165-degree field of view, while the wide-angle lens provides 35% more coverage of the area in front of you. The lenses are attached by twisting them on and off of the specially engineered cover. The lens case acts as a tripod adapter or can be used as a handle which also twists onto the iPhone’s cover. Megaupload Data Could Be Erased This Week

Pirate KeyAll the data on Megaupload – legal or illegal – could be erased as soon as Thursday, Feb. 2, the Associated Press reports.

The file storage website hires outside companies – Carpathia Hosting Inc. and Cogent Communications Group Inc – to store its users’ data.

Since Megaupload’s assets have been frozen, the service cannot pay the hosting companies to keep hosting the data. According to a letter by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, filed in the case Friday, Jan 27, they could begin deleting data Thursday.

Megaupload attorney Ira Rothken says the company is doing what it can to try to keep the data from being deleted. “We’re cautiously optimistic at this point that because the United States, as well as Megaupload, should have a common desire to protect consumers, that this type of agreement will get done,” he said. Apple Author Screen Shot
Apple’s recent iBooks Author special event revealed the changes the company plans to make in the world of publishing. While iBooks 2 is innocent enough, Author is more than it appears on the surface.

How could writers not like the pitch? Create your own e-books in a sleek, easy-to-use app (similar to the iWork suite), and put them into iBooks. You can add galleries, widgets, and other media to enhance your e-book. (more…)
